Bedroom interiors

A bedroom has to hold a lot of storage and still feel calm. We plan the wardrobe, bed, ceiling, lighting and electrical points together. You can see this approach in our GIDA bedroom project further down this page.

Wardrobes: hinged or sliding?

Hinged wardrobes open fully, so you see everything at once, and they are usually the more economical choice. They need clear floor in front for the shutters to swing. In our GIDA bedroom we built a full-height hinged wardrobe with LED profile lights running down the inside.

Sliding wardrobes need no swing space, so they suit compact rooms or a wardrobe that faces the bed across a narrow passage. Only part opens at a time, the track needs occasional cleaning, and the hardware usually makes them costlier.

Laminate or acrylic finish?

Laminate comes in matte, textured and wood-grain looks. It resists scratches, hides fingerprints and is generally the more affordable finish. Acrylic gives a smooth, mirror-like gloss that brightens a room, but it shows fingerprints and fine scratches more readily and usually costs more.

In Gorakhpur's humid monsoon months, the board underneath matters as much as the finish. As general guidance, choose moisture-resistant boards with edge banding on every exposed edge.

Beds with storage

A hydraulic lift-up bed (box bed) raises the whole base on gas lifts, giving the most space for quilts, suitcases and other seasonal items. Drawer storage is handier for everyday things, but it needs free floor beside the bed for the drawers to open. The GIDA bedroom has an upholstered storage bed with a channel-stitched headboard and gold-toned trim.

False ceilings with cove lighting

A cove hides an LED strip in a recessed ledge of the false ceiling and bounces soft, indirect light off the ceiling. We draw the ceiling with the electrical layout so it works around beams and AC piping. In the GIDA bedroom, a cove-lit false ceiling with recessed downlights runs around the room.

Wall panelling and bed back-panels

Moulding and panelling add texture and can hide the wiring for bedside lights and charging points. In the GIDA bedroom, arched moulding frames the bed wall, with fluted panelling beside it. On outer walls that get damp in the monsoon, check and treat the wall before any panelling goes up.

Study units

A wall-mounted desk with a shelf above keeps the floor clear in a small bedroom or a child's room. A wardrobe-integrated study builds the desk into the wardrobe run, so the room keeps one clean line of storage. Either way, plan a power point and a task light at the desk.

Bedroom lighting

Layer three kinds of light: ambient (ceiling or cove light), task (reading lights, a desk light, wardrobe lights) and accent (light on a back-panel or niche). Warm white, around 2700K to 3000K, feels relaxed in a bedroom.
