A good false ceiling does three jobs at once: it hides wiring and AC pipes, it gives each room the right light, and it makes a plain concrete slab feel finished. Get it wrong and you live with cracks, sagging boards or a cramped room for years. This guide explains how to plan false ceiling design in Gorakhpur homes, from choosing between POP, gypsum and PVC to lighting ideas and the factors that decide your final cost.

At Horizon Construction & Interior, our owner is a civil engineer and interior designer, working with a team of architects. As an interior designer in Gorakhpur and builder since 2016, we have served 500+ customers across 1000+ projects, and we use ISI-certified materials. What follows is the same advice we give clients at the first site visit.

What is a false ceiling, and do you need one?

A false ceiling (also called a drop or suspended ceiling) is a second ceiling hung below the RCC slab on a metal or wooden frame. The gap between the two hides electrical conduits, AC copper pipes and ducts, and gives you a clean surface for cove lights, profile lights and spotlights.

You probably need one if you want concealed lighting, a split or ducted AC with hidden piping, or a better-looking ceiling in a room where the slab has uneven beams. You may not need one in a low room, a store room, or where the budget is better spent on waterproofing or wiring.

POP vs gypsum vs PVC: false ceiling materials compared

There is no single "best" material. Each one suits some rooms better than others.

Material

Finish

Moisture behaviour

Crack risk

Maintenance

Best rooms

POP (Plaster of Paris)

Seamless, can be moulded into curves and decorative shapes

Weakens and stains if water seeps in

Medium to high if the frame or curing is poor

Repainting every few years; patch repairs need skilled labour

Living room, bedroom, puja room (detailed designs)

Gypsum board

Smooth, factory-made sheets; joints taped and finished

Standard boards dislike damp; moisture-resistant (MR) boards are made for humid areas

Low to medium; mostly at joints if taping is poor

Easy to repaint; damaged panels can be replaced

Living room, bedroom, dining, offices; MR boards for kitchen and bathroom

PVC panels

Ready-finished strips; many colours and wood or marble looks

Waterproof

Very low

Wipe clean; no painting

Bathroom, utility, balcony, budget kitchen ceilings

Wooden / veneer

Warm, premium look; can be combined with gypsum

Needs sealing; can swell or attract termites if untreated

Low (boards can warp if damp)

Polish touch-ups; termite treatment

Living room feature panels, puja room, bedroom accents

Metal grid / grid tiles

Modular tiles in an exposed or concealed grid

Good (metal and mineral tiles both available)

Very low

Tiles lift out for service access

Offices, shops, clinics, basements

Quick rule: gypsum for most dry rooms, POP when you want curves and detailed mouldings, MR gypsum or PVC where there is steam or water, and wood only as an accent with proper treatment.

False ceiling designs by room

Living room

The living room can carry the most design. Popular choices are a peripheral (border) false ceiling with a cove around the edge, a raised central panel above the sofa, or a gypsum and wood combination where a veneer strip runs over the TV wall. Keep the design centred on the seating or TV area, not just on the room, and line up spotlights with furniture.

Bedroom

Bedrooms work best with calm, layered light. A single or double-step peripheral ceiling with warm cove lighting, a few spotlights near the wardrobe and dressing area, and the fan centred over the bed is a reliable layout. Avoid strong spotlights directly above the pillow area.

Kitchen

Kitchens need light where you work: over the counter, hob and sink. A simple flat ceiling in MR gypsum or PVC, with a cove or a few spotlights, is usually better than a heavy design. Leave service access near the chimney duct and any water lines.

Dining area

A raised panel or profile-light outline that follows the table shape makes the dining area feel defined, especially in an open plan. Plan a pendant or chandelier point over the centre of the table before the ceiling is closed.

Puja room

A small POP or wooden ceiling with a recessed centre, a soft cove light or a subtle jaali pattern suits a puja room. Keep the colours light and leave ventilation for diya and agarbatti smoke.

Lighting ideas: cove, profile and spotlights

Lighting is what most people notice, so plan it before the boards go up.

  • Cove lighting: an LED strip hidden in a recess around the ceiling edge, bouncing soft light off the ceiling. Great for bedrooms and living rooms. Warm white (around 3000K) feels relaxed; neutral white suits kitchens.

  • Profile or linear lights: slim aluminium profiles with an LED strip set flush into the ceiling as straight lines or outlines. They give a modern, clean look in dining areas, lobbies and passages.

  • Spotlights and downlights: small recessed lights for task lighting over counters, wardrobes, artwork and study tables.

  • Pendants and chandeliers: best over dining tables and double-height areas; need a strong hook fixed to the slab, not to the false ceiling board.

Plan the electrical points first. Before framing starts, mark every light, fan, AC, sensor, speaker and CCTV point on a drawing. Decide which lights go on which switch, and whether you want dimmers or smart controls. Run wiring in conduits, keep LED drivers where they can be reached for service, and use good-quality strips and drivers so you don't have to open the ceiling later.

Gorakhpur factors: humidity, ceiling height, termites and AC

Humidity and monsoon

Gorakhpur's humid summers and heavy monsoon are hard on ceilings. Fix any slab leakage or seepage before installing a false ceiling, because water above the boards causes stains, sagging and peeling paint. In kitchens and bathrooms, use moisture-resistant (MR) gypsum boards or PVC, and make sure exhaust fans and the chimney vent outdoors.

Ceiling height rules of thumb

A false ceiling typically drops a few inches at the edges for a cove, and more where AC ducts or deep recesses are needed. As a rule of thumb, aim to keep the finished ceiling comfortably above head and door height, and use a peripheral design rather than a full drop in lower rooms. Measure your actual height on site before choosing a design.

Termites

Wooden frames, plywood and veneer can attract termites, which are common in the region. Prefer galvanised metal framing, treat any wood used, and get anti-termite treatment done for the building where needed.

AC duct and pipe planning

Decide the AC type and position before the ceiling is designed. Split AC copper pipes and drain lines, or ducts for a ducted system, need routes and slopes inside the ceiling void, plus access panels for servicing. Retrofitting an AC after the ceiling is done usually means cutting and patching.

What affects false ceiling cost

False ceiling prices vary widely, so we don't publish a rate per square foot. Your final cost depends on:

  • Material: POP, standard gypsum, MR gypsum, PVC, wood/veneer or grid tiles each cost differently, and so do brands and board thickness.

  • Area: the total ceiling area and how many rooms are covered.

  • Design complexity: a flat ceiling costs less than multi-level steps, curves, coves and decorative mouldings.

  • Lighting: the number and type of cove strips, profile lights, spotlights, drivers and switches.

  • Moisture-resistant boards: MR gypsum or PVC for kitchens and bathrooms adds to the material cost but avoids early damage.

  • Site conditions: ceiling height, beams, AC piping and access panels, and any repair or waterproofing needed first.

Common false ceiling mistakes to avoid

  1. Installing the ceiling before fixing slab leakage or seepage.

  2. Finalising the design before planning lights, fan, AC and switch positions.

  3. Using standard gypsum board in kitchens and bathrooms.

  4. Dropping the ceiling too low in a room with limited height.

  5. Hanging heavy chandeliers or fans from the board instead of the slab.

  6. Skipping access panels for AC pipes, drivers and junction boxes.

  7. Using cheap LED strips and drivers that fail or change colour quickly.

  8. Painting before the joints and POP have fully set and cured, which leads to hairline cracks.

FAQ

Which is better for a false ceiling: POP or gypsum?

Gypsum boards are faster to install, give a smooth factory finish and usually show fewer cracks. POP is better for curves and detailed mouldings. Many homes use gypsum for flat areas and POP for decorative details.

Is a PVC false ceiling good for homes in Gorakhpur?

PVC is waterproof and easy to clean, so it suits bathrooms, utility areas, balconies and some kitchens. For living rooms and bedrooms, most people prefer the finish of gypsum or POP.

How much height does a false ceiling reduce?

It depends on the design. A simple cove at the edges takes only a few inches, while AC ducts and deep recesses need more. We measure your room on site and suggest a design that keeps enough clear height.

Can I install a false ceiling in the kitchen?

Yes. Use moisture-resistant gypsum or PVC, keep the chimney duct and exhaust venting outside, and leave access panels near pipes and electrical points.

How much does a false ceiling cost in Gorakhpur?

It depends on the material, area, design, lighting and whether moisture-resistant boards are needed. Call 079855 08879 for a site estimate.

Do you do only false ceilings, or full interiors?

Both. You can hire Horizon for the full package (map approval, construction and interiors) or for any single service, including false ceilings.
