Straight staircase
One straight flight. It's simple to build, but it needs a long, narrow space. Long flights usually need a landing in between.
L-shaped (quarter-turn) staircase
Two flights with a landing at the corner. It fits well along two walls and is a common choice for independent houses.
U-shaped (dog-legged) staircase
Two parallel flights with a landing between them. This is very common in Indian homes because it fits a compact rectangle and suits multi-storey houses.
Spiral staircase
Steps wind around a central pole. It uses very little floor area, so it's sometimes used for terrace access. It is harder to climb and to carry things on, so it's usually not suited for the main staircase.
Where to place the staircase
Inside or outside: an internal staircase keeps the house connected. An external one gives a separate entry, which helps if the upper floor will be rented or given to another family member.

Size and dimensions: general planning guidance
Riser height, tread depth, stair width, headroom and railing height all decide how comfortable and safe a staircase is. The right numbers depend on your plot, the floor height, the building bye-laws and the National Building Code of India (NBC 2016). We don't give fixed numbers here, because your architect and engineer should set them for your house.
Simple points to keep in mind:
Keep all risers in a flight the same height. Uneven steps are a common cause of tripping.
Leave enough headroom under beams and slabs.
Plan a landing where a flight gets long or turns.
Make it wide enough to move furniture up.
Structure

Finishing materials for steps

A continuous handrail that's easy to grip.
Gaps between railing bars small enough that a child can't slip through.
Anti-slip treads, especially near the entrance and on outdoor stairs.
Good lighting, with switches at the top and bottom.
No loose rugs or clutter on the steps or landings.
