Structural Design for House in Gorakhpur: RCC Frame, Columns, Beams and Slab Explained

Ghar ka naksha everyone talks about: kitne kamre, kitchen kahan, staircase kidhar. But the drawing that decides whether your house stays safe for decades is the one most families never see: the structural design.
Structural design for a house in Gorakhpur means working out the size and steel of every footing, column, beam and slab so the building safely carries its own weight, the people and furniture inside, future floors, and forces like wind and earthquakes. This guide explains what it covers, why it matters here, and what to ask for before construction starts. It is general information only: every house is different, and a qualified civil or structural engineer must design the structure for your specific plot, soil and plan.
At Horizon Construction & Interior, we have been designing and building homes in Gorakhpur since 2016. Our team is led by a civil engineer and interior designer, working with a team of architects, and we have served 500+ customers across 1000+ projects.
What is structural design?
The architectural plan shows rooms and spaces. The structural design shows the skeleton that holds them up.
Architectural drawing: room sizes, doors, windows, elevation.
Structural drawing: footing sizes and depth, column positions and sizes, beam and slab sizes, and the steel bars in each (diameter, number and spacing).
Both must match. A column placed in the middle of a room, or a beam cutting through a window, shows that the two were not planned together. That is why the architect and engineer should work on the plan side by side. Read more in our post on architect vs engineer.
Why it matters in Gorakhpur
Soil conditions
Many areas around Gorakhpur have soft, clayey or high water-table soil, especially near low-lying zones. The footing type and depth must suit the soil, which is why a soil test should come before the structural design. See our guide to soil testing before house construction in Gorakhpur.
Earthquake zone
Gorakhpur falls in a seismic zone where earthquake-resistant detailing is important. This affects how columns and beams are connected, how stirrups are spaced, and how the frame behaves as one unit.
Future floors
Bahut families plan "abhi ground floor, baad mein first floor". If the footings and columns are not designed for the future floors now, adding them later can be unsafe. Tell your engineer your long-term plan on day one.
The parts of an RCC house frame
Footing (foundation)
The footing spreads the load of each column into the soil. Its size and depth depend on the soil report and the load. Common types in homes are isolated footings and, on weak soil, combined or raft footings.
Plinth beam
The plinth beam ties the columns together at ground level and supports the walls above. It also helps reduce uneven settlement.
Columns
Columns carry the load from beams and slabs down to the footings. Their size and steel are decided by the load and the number of floors. Columns should line up floor to floor; shifting a column on an upper floor creates problems.
Beams
Beams carry the slab load to the columns. Deep beams over large rooms or openings are normal; the design decides their depth and steel.
Slab
The slab is the floor or roof. Its thickness and steel depend on the room span. Large rooms without beams need careful design, and cantilevers such as balconies and chajjas need extra attention.
What a proper structural drawing set includes
Column layout plan with grid and sizes
Footing details with depth and steel
Plinth beam, floor beam and roof beam details
Slab layouts with steel direction and spacing
Column schedule (size and bars for each floor)
Staircase details
General notes on concrete and steel grades, cover and lap length, as decided by the engineer for your house
With this set, the site team builds exactly what the engineer designed, instead of guessing "jaisa pados mein hua tha".
Common mistakes to avoid
Building without a structural design: relying only on the mason's experience.
Copying a neighbour's column size: the load, soil and spans may be different.
Changing room sizes on site without telling the engineer.
Cutting beams or columns later for pipes, AC lines or new doors.
Ignoring future floors in the first design.
Poor concrete and curing: a good design fails if the concrete is weak or not cured.
Materials and site checks
Use ISI-certified cement and steel, of the grade the engineer has specified in the drawing.
Check bar diameter, spacing and cover before every concrete pour.
Use cover blocks so the steel does not touch the shuttering.
Cure concrete properly as per the engineer's advice.
Get the engineer to check steel before casting footings, columns and slabs.

FAQ
Is structural design necessary for a small house?
Yes. Even a single-storey house needs footing, column, beam and slab sizes worked out by a qualified engineer for that house. A small house built wrongly can crack just like a big one.
What is the difference between a naksha and a structural drawing?
The naksha shows rooms, doors and windows. The structural drawing shows footings, columns, beams, slabs and the steel inside them.
Can I add a floor later?
Only if the footings and columns were designed for it. Tell your engineer about future floors before construction starts.
Do I need a soil test before structural design?
It is strongly advised. The soil report helps the engineer choose the right footing type and depth.
Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes, we offer a free consultation on call. Share your plot size, floors planned and needs, and our team will talk you through the structural options by phone.
