The living room is where your family spends its evenings, where guests are welcomed and where festivals are celebrated. In many Gorakhpur homes it also has to serve as the TV room, a puja corner, a study spot and sometimes an extra bedroom when relatives visit. Good living room interior design makes all of this work without the room feeling crowded.

This guide covers living room interior design in Gorakhpur step by step: layouts, TV units, false ceilings, lighting, colours, flooring and storage, plus the factors that affect cost.

At Horizon Construction & Interior, we have been designing and building homes in Gorakhpur since 2016. Our team is led by a civil engineer and interior designer, working with a team of architects, and we have served 500+ customers across 1000+ projects. Our interior design services cover everything from the first measurement to the final installation.

Start with the layout

Before choosing colours or furniture, plan how people will move and sit in the room.

Common living room layouts

  • Rectangular room: keep the sofa along the longer wall and the TV opposite. This gives a natural seating zone and a clear walkway.

  • Square room: an L-shaped sofa in one corner with a centre table creates a cosy conversation area.

  • Living-cum-dining: this is very common in Gorakhpur flats and independent houses. Separate the two zones with a rug, a change in ceiling design, a partition shelf or different lighting, rather than a solid wall.

  • Living room with the main entrance: add a small foyer zone with a shoe cabinet and a console, so the door does not open straight onto the sofa.

Plan movement first

  • Keep the main walkway from the entrance to the inner rooms clear.

  • Do not block windows with tall units; natural light and cross-ventilation matter in our hot summers.

  • Plan where guests will sit and where the family relaxes every day. They are often different spots.

TV unit design

The TV wall is usually the focal point of the living room.

  • Wall-mounted TV with a floating unit: clean, easy to clean underneath and good for smaller rooms.

  • Full-wall TV panel: a feature wall in laminate, veneer, fluted panels or textured paint, with concealed wiring and a low storage unit.

  • TV unit with open and closed storage: closed cabinets hide set-top boxes and clutter, while a few open shelves display books or décor.

  • Back-lit panels: soft LED strips behind the TV panel reduce eye strain when watching at night.

Plan the electrical points, set-top box location and cable routes before the panel goes up. Moving them later means breaking the finished wall.

False ceiling ideas for living rooms

A false ceiling hides wiring, adds layered lighting and gives the room a finished look.

  • Peripheral cove ceiling: a border around the room with hidden LED strips. It works in most rooms and keeps the centre height.

  • Profile light lines: slim linear lights set into the ceiling, as in the lobby shown above. They give a modern look without a deep drop.

  • Centre feature: a raised or recessed centre panel above the seating area, sometimes with a chandelier.

  • Zoned ceilings: different designs over the living and dining areas help separate the zones in an open plan.

Keep the ceiling simple in rooms with a low height, and plan fan and light positions together. For materials and design options, read our guide to false ceiling design in Gorakhpur.

Lighting: plan it in layers

A single tube light cannot do everything. Combine:

  1. Ambient lighting: ceiling lights or panel lights for general brightness.

  2. Accent lighting: cove lights, profile lights, back-lit TV panels and wall washers for mood.

  3. Task lighting: a reading lamp near the sofa or lights over a study corner.

  4. Decorative lighting: a chandelier, pendant or wall lamps as a feature.

Use warm white light for relaxed evenings and keep separate switches for each layer, so you can change the mood easily.

Colours and wall finishes

  • Light neutrals such as off-white, beige and warm grey make rooms feel bigger and brighter.

  • One accent wall behind the TV or sofa adds character without overwhelming the room.

  • Wall moulding and panelling, like the wainscoting in our dining project, add a classic, premium touch.

  • Textured paint or wallpaper works well on a single feature wall.

  • Washable paint is practical in homes with children, as living rooms see heavy daily use.

Tie the colours of the curtains, sofa fabric and cushions to the wall palette, so the room looks planned rather than collected.

Flooring and furniture

  • Vitrified or marble-look tiles are easy to maintain in our dusty summers and humid monsoons.

  • Choose a sofa size that suits the room, and leave space to walk around the centre table.

  • Use rugs to define the seating area in an open plan.

  • Pick fabrics that are easy to clean and do not hold dust.

Storage ideas for the living room

A tidy living room needs storage planned from the start.

  • TV unit drawers and cabinets for remotes, chargers, documents and games.

  • Shoe cabinet and console near the entrance.

  • Crockery or display unit with glass shutters and LED lighting, as shown below, for festive dinnerware and showpieces.

  • Built-in seating with storage under a window.

  • Puja unit with drawers for diyas and samagri, if the puja corner is in the living area.

  • Wall shelves for books and plants, kept to a few so they are easy to dust.

Many families also need more bedroom storage to keep the living room clear. Our guide to wardrobe design in Gorakhpur covers this in detail.

Designing for Gorakhpur's climate

  • Choose moisture-resistant boards and edge-banding for units on outer walls, as monsoon humidity can swell untreated wood.

  • Treat wood against termites before installation.

  • Use curtains or blinds that block the harsh summer sun while still letting in light.

  • Plan fan positions to suit the furniture layout, not just the centre of the room.

What affects the cost of a living room interior

We do not quote fixed figures without seeing the room. The main cost factors are:

  • Room size and shape

  • Scope: TV unit only, or a full makeover with ceiling, lighting, walls and storage

  • False ceiling design and the number of lights

  • Materials and finishes: board type, laminate, veneer, paint or panels

  • Furniture: made-to-measure units or ready furniture

  • Civil changes: flooring, electrical rewiring or wall changes

FAQ

How do I make a small living room look bigger?

Use light colours, a wall-mounted TV with a floating unit, a simple cove ceiling, mirrors and furniture sized to the room. Keep walkways and windows clear.

What is the best TV unit design for a living room?

It depends on the room size and how much storage you need. A floating unit suits smaller rooms, while a full-wall panel with closed storage suits larger rooms and hides clutter.

Should I put a false ceiling in my living room?

A false ceiling helps with lighting and hides wiring. In rooms with a low ceiling, choose a slim cove border or profile lights instead of a deep drop.

How can I separate the living and dining areas?

Use a rug, different ceiling designs or lighting, a partition shelf or a change in wall finish. This keeps the space open but clearly zoned.

Which colours work best for a living room in Gorakhpur?

Light neutrals with one accent wall work well. They keep the room bright and feel cooler in summer. Match the curtains and soft furnishings to the palette.

Can Horizon design just my living room?

Yes. You can hire us for a single room, such as the living room or only the TV unit, or for complete home interiors and construction. Book a design consult to get started.
